The design incorporates a stained glass interpretation of a black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) foraging among numerous fuchsias. The colors of the only truly black throated hummingbird native to the western United States compliment the striking field of fuchsia colors. Individual pieces of glass are inserted into the solid-wood panels to execute the images. The colors can best be viewed when the screen is placed where unfiltered sunlight passes through the glass from the backside.

The 3-panel folding screen is carefully fabricated from Quartersawn Black Cherry (Prunus serotina). Quartersawn Black Cherry was selected for this piece because of the marvelous combination of ray fleck and grain exhibited, particularly on the panels. Housed dovetail joints (Japanese Ari-dome joinery technique) are used for the panel frames.

The screen is been hand finished with a durable oil-varnish to highlight and protect the unique character of the Black Cherry giving it a warm feeling to the touch.
