How to Order
This gorgeous door is hand crafted from Alder, Walnut, and Willow finished with patinated metal, and a Tung Oil varnish. The surround that frames the door, surrounds our vision as we enter the space beyond. If it is a simple piece of 2” plain wood (typical doorway) our experience of passage isn’t very special nor does it suggest anything special on the other side. Homeowners have the ability to make a statement about themselves that signifies ‘this is my special place’ to those that pass their doorway. Creating a visually significant door surround expresses their architectural taste in a simple way and produces an enhanced experience of space.
On one side of this doorway is a bar area with a lot of visual textures going on including the Egyptian plaster walls. On the other side of the door is the small wine room – again visually busy but ordered. The client likes an Asian feel mixed in with everything else. The willow door surround not only blended with the walls, but added that extra design element. The Arts & Crafts design is stepped up with walnut carved textured panels and patined metal. The bar side of the door has latticework over the metal panel. Because the wine room is small and busy that side of the door is simplified with the panels reversed. The surround on this side is simple and ties in with the architecture of the room. The handle on the bar side reflects the carved texture. Hardware on the wine side is a simple pull ring and push plate.
One side of the door is in a very dry hot environment while the wine side is cool and damp. The core of the construction is laminated balsa wood with .25” veneer alder to insure no warping. Each piece looked like a wood sandwich. Mortise and tenon with tongue and groove joinery secure every part. The lattice is built with lap joints and finished on both sides before attaching to the door.
