How to Order
This table was designed in conjunction with its owners. It is made from a single wide plank of Pennsylvania Black Cherry, 34 inches in width and 60 inches in length. The legs are of solid 4 inch Walnut.
The function of this piece is beyond that of the usual living room coffee table. The family for whom this table was built is politically active and their home is a frequent gathering place for lively discussions. It is not a large home, and one of the requirements of this table was that it double as seating. This table will comfortably seat 4 adults, but 6 adults will fit in a pinch.
The joinery of the legs to the top is unique. Four tenons were cut on the top of each leg, with four matching mortises let into the top to accommodate the quad tenons of each leg. The layout of this was challenging since there are no square edges from which to reference the layout. Each of the tenons is wedged at 5 degrees to create an internal, mechanical “dovetail.” The wedges are of Ebony.
Since this is a bit of a country house, the clients preferred a very natural look to the table and so the edge of the tree – the wane – was left intact. The bark was removed by hand but all of the gentle curves were retained through the careful use of abrasives.
The finish is an oil varnish mixture which is quite durable to both heat and liquids, including alcoholic beverages. The sap wood on Cherry is light and of a slightly less dense texture than the heartwood. The edges of this table were necessarily sap wood since the entire 34 inch width of the tree was being used. The light color of the sap wood was hand colored with a boiled linseed oil and Japan color mixture to closely match the color of the heartwood.
